In homes across North Texas, women are the ones holding everything together.

You're mapping out carpool schedules in Frisco, fielding work calls while making dinner in Prosper, and somehow also keeping track of everyone's doctor appointments but your own.

That's why Legacy ER & Urgent Care is using Women's Health Month to remind you of something easy to forget: your health belongs on that list, too.

This month, we're spotlighting some of the most important, and most overlooked, health issues affecting women in our community.

Heart Health

When it comes to why women seek emergency care, chest pain is near the top of the list — and for good reason.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States — responsible for about 1 in 5 female deaths, and research from the American Heart Association shows that women are less likely than men to recognize their own symptoms or seek care in time.

What makes this trickier is that heart attack symptoms in women don't always look like what you see in movies.

Yes, chest pain is possible, but women are more likely to experience shortness of breath, nausea, jaw pain, or an unusual sense of fatigue or dread. These subtler signs are easy to dismiss, and that delay can be dangerous.

What you can do right now:

  • Schedule a check-up with your primary care doctor and ask specifically about your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
  • Choose heart-healthy foods, stay active, avoid smoking and manage stress.
  • Learn your family's heart history — it matters more than most people realize.

If you think you may be having a heart attack or stroke, call 911 immediately. Never attempt to drive yourself.

UTIs: Don't Wait It Out

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common reasons women visit Legacy ER & Urgent Care.

A burning sensation, a constant urge to go, a dull ache in your lower abdomen, these are the hallmark signs of a UTI.

They're uncomfortable, they're disruptive, and if left untreated, they can spread to your kidneys and become a serious problem.

The good news? A few simple habits go a long way:

  • Drink water throughout the day (not just when you're thirsty)
  • Urinate after sex
  • Always wipe front to back
  • Don't hold it — when you need to go, go
  • If you're getting UTIs repeatedly, talk to your doctor about why

On the gynecological side, symptoms like severe pelvic pain, heavy or irregular bleeding, unusual discharge, or pain during sex aren't things to push to the bottom of your to-do list. They're your body asking for attention. Regular visits to your OB-GYN can catch issues early, when they're most treatable.

And if you're pregnant, please don't skip those prenatal appointments. Watch for signs like decreased fetal movement, cramping, or any fluid leakage. Your instincts as a mother start now. If something feels wrong, call your provider.

Mental Health: The Load Is Real

Texas women carry a heavy load. Anxiety, burnout, and a persistent low-grade stress have become so common they can start to feel normal. But they're not and you don't have to keep pushing through alone.

Give yourself permission to try some of this:

  • Take a walk through the trails at Erwin Park in McKinney, Celebration Park in Allen, or Iron Horse Trail in North Richland Hills.
  • Talk to someone you trust, not to vent, but to actually be heard.
  • Set a real boundary — one thing you say no to this week because it's too much.

Don't wait until you're at a breaking point to reach out to a mental health professional. The goal isn't perfection. It's progress, one small step at a time
